44 Billion

Chronicle.com posted an article called "$44 billion ought to buy some accountability on campuses" by Kevin Carey. This was an interesting article that touched on several points from Johnstones book Financing Higher Education. This article discussed the pell grant that so many students have relied on for college financial aid.

The best part of the article explained howlow income students today are much worse of than students thirty years ago. A student who had a pell grant thirty years ago would have paid less money out of pocket than a student with a pell grant today. The reason, The cost of  a college education has exceeded the rise in inflation.

Carey also discussed how many schools who receive the most pell grant money had some of the lowest graduation rates. schools who receive this funding need to set in place a plan to prevent this money from becoming wasted. What that plan should be is a good question.
