This article reflects President Obama’s proposed budget for 2011 regarding federal spending on education. The new budget includes increased federal spending on education by six percent as well as an increased maximum Pell Grant to $5,710 up from %5,550. The Pell Grant award will also automatically increase each year of the next decade. The increase will be consistent with the rate of inflation plus one percentage point.
I feel this budget proposal is much needed. The cost of tuition today is outrageous and students need all the assistance possible. Tuition rates are far surpassing the rates of inflation and soon higher education will only be for the financially comfortable students. Students who come from lower to middle class will have fewer opportunities to attend and finish college if federal funding is not increased. In my opinion, the federal government needs to get their priorities straight and find out where education falls. If we want this country to move towards equality, we have to open up ways for higher education to be more affordable. This proposal is a step in the right direction, but more still needs to be done.
